FOBL News – Autumn 2016
It Really is More Than Just Books!
Yes that’s what we’ve been trying to let people know this summer; with all the activities in the library, the online subscriptions available for free, the free Wi-Fi, the CDs and DVDs, Benson Library is trying hard to provide what the community needs. If you can think of what next – please let us know.
Family History Perhaps?
The next launch on the horizon is the FOBL Family History Clinic, which will start on Thursday 13th October between 6pm and 7pm in the library. Have you ever wanted to find out about ancestors? Perhaps you did some work and got stuck? Why not drop in and have a chat with our volunteer helpers? Yes we’re amateurs, but we have a lot of experience and….. it’s free of course!
If you’re a parent, carer or maybe a grandparent of one of our younger members, you may have noticed the mats, toys etc are now in use during Rhyme Time. Yes, FOBL provided these and we’d be happy to provide more if we know what might be popular. Just let Hilary know or contact us.
Are the children taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge this year? FOBL will be supporting this wonderful event by funding some small prizes as a reward.
There’s also a competition running for the youngsters – ‘Name The Bunny’. We’ve got this lovely little cuddly bunny as our new FOBL mascot, but we need a name for him/her. Full details in the library, but be quick because the competition closes on 24th September.
This Year’s Events
We had a fantastic Cake Sale Day in the High Street in May, and our thanks go to Pat Veitch for doing such an amazing job organising it.
The Riverside Play this month was over booked in the evening again, so Sue Cooper organised an afternoon matinee for the first time which went well I hear. Once again, please could I say a big thank you to Sue & David Cooper for all their hard work and their generosity in arranging for the donation of funds to FOBL.
Our new 100 Club got off to a great start and hopefully, when we start selling shares next January, it will go even better. Thanks to George Verdon for getting this off the ground.
Have You Seen Our Book Bags?
There are some in the library behind Hilary’s desk, lovely eco-friendly with our new logo on them – and all yours for a small donation towards funds.
Next Big Event – Supper Quiz
Our annual Supper Quiz is on Friday 25th November 2016 in the Parish Hall as usual. This is our biggest fund raiser of the year and usually a sell out, so please let us know in good time if you can put a table of 6-8 friends/neighbours together for a fun evening.
How Are We Doing in FOBL?
Well we are still here after nearly 5 years! The library is still open and the hours remain the same. Many people don’t seem to realise we are still here and just what we do. Whilst that’s almost a compliment, it’s also something of a problem because we need help in providing volunteers to assist Hilary, in running the charity and most of all in raising funds.
This is why we now have a logo, matching book bags and very soon, our own mascot. We are aiming to form a stronger identity and most importantly, spread the word that we are still working away to keep the library going.
So How Can You Help?
Well there’s something for everyone really, whether you have a spare couple of hours a month or just an hour or two once a year.
Could you help organise or run one of our events? Could you assist with secretarial help? Bake us a cake? Run a raffle? Help us with rostering volunteers?
No experience needed really (except for the cake baking) just the willingness to help keep our library running.
Bring your mobile device to the library and make the most of the internet with free Wi-Fi
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Be a helper! We have a team of Trustees and Volunteers who work in the library but we urgently need helpers in other ways such as organising events and fundraising. Just a few hours of your time in the course of a year will make a difference.
Become a full member of FOBL by paying £10 for life membership, and even better, consider making a regular annual donation.
It’s now easier than ever to support our charity. Click on the button at the top of this page and follow the link to PayPal. From there, you choose how much to donate and whether you want this to be a one-off or a regular amount. If you don’t have a PayPal account then do not worry. Just follow the instructions to make a donation using a debit or credit card.
